South Bay Offers Get-Out-of-Jail-Free Cards

Visiting jail with a warrant against you usually means you'll be booked on the spot.

But Santa Clara County is feeling compassionate this holiday season toward anyone with a misdemeanor warrant for a nonviolent offense or a traffic warrant.

Starting Wednesday, they can simply walk into any local law enforcement agency, pick up a citation, then cruise out with a new court date, the Mercury News reports.

The sheriff's office said even warrants marked "No Cite and Release," "No Walk-Over," and "No Bail" are valid for the program called "Operation Second Chance 2010."

During the past five years, around 1,700 people participated in the program. But people with felony warrants or warrants involving violence are not eligible.

After Dec. 31, 2010, the county's giving spirit expires along with the get-out-of-jail-free cards.
