PHILADELPHIA — Friday will be a big day for Denard Span, who returns to Washington, where he played three seasons for the Nationals. He made sure to enjoy Thursday, too.
Span golfed a low Severino Gonzalez offering into the right field seats in the 10th inning, leading the Giants to a 3-2 win over the Phillies. The victory was just the second on the road in the second half.
Matt Moore’s Giants career briefly got off to a shaky start, with a walk and double off the wall putting a run on the board two batters into the bottom of the first. Moore would walk another two batters later, but he got the jitters out of the way and made it out of the first with the score tied.
Once he settled in, Moore showed the repertoire that made him such an expensive deadline addition. He got his first strikeout by throwing Freddy Galvis four straight 95 mph fastballs and then finishing him off with a good curveball. Vince Velasquez went down on a 95 mph heater and Moore struck out three of the next eight. While Moore showed great stuff, he also had trouble finding the strike zone.
The Phillies went 21 consecutive plate appearances without a hit but Moore kept putting guys on with free passes. It caught up to him in the bottom of the sixth, with the Giants leading 2-1. Moore walked leadoff batter Tommy Joseph and an infield single and bloop loaded the bases. He gave up a run on a groundout before getting out of the jam.
Starting pitching report: Moore had four previous six-walk games, all coming in 2013. He was an All-Star that year, so it didn’t hurt him too much.
Bullpen report: Derek Law pitched a scoreless eighth. He has 14 consecutive scoreless appearances.

At the plate: Span had a pair of singles before the homer and finished the series with seven hits.
In the field: Aaron Altherr saved a pair of runs with a diving catch in the top of the eighth. These Phillies play hard, man.
Attendance: The Phillies announced a crowd of 30,229 human beings who Trust the Process.
