St. Anthony's Food Drive Kicks Off, Goal is 1,000 Turkeys

St. Anthony's annual curbside Donation Drive kicked off today with a goal of collecting 1,000 turkeys before Thanksgiving.

Volunteers clad in red jackets greeted drivers Saturday outside of St. Anthony's dining room on Golden Gate Avenue, near Jones Street. They collected turkeys, canned goods, hygiene items, socks and monetary donations.

Chefs at St. Anthony's are preparing to dish out 4,000 meals for the Holiday this Thursday.

"It's great, it's a great feeling," turkey donor Julie Burdick said. "They said it's the busiest day they've had for the first day of the drop-off, and we saw a long line of people coming to get their meal today, so there's definitely a need."

Funded entirely by private donations, the St. Anthony Foundation has been feeding and helping people in need for more than six decades.

Donations will continue tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
