Authorities are advising against travel to the greater Lake Tahoe area Sunday because of a winter storm that is expected to bring significant snowfall and long travel delays.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the region until 7 p.m. Sunday. The storm could bring periods of moderate to heavy snowfall, with possible whiteout conditions. Periodic road closures are possible.
Motorists could be stuck in their vehicle for many hours and should avoid traveling unless necessary, the weather service said. Those who must travel should prepare for long delays and carry chains and an emergency kit with extra food, water and clothing.
The Placer County Sheriff's Office posted a photo on social media Sunday morning of traffic at a standstill on eastbound Interstate Highway 80 before Applegate.
"Please stay home and avoid traveling to the Sierra unless you absolutely have to," the sheriff's office wrote.
