String of Water Mains Break Overnight in Millbrae

About 25 homes in Millbrae are without water Friday afternoon  following a bizarre string of water main breaks that occurred overnight.

Crews were working to repair damage Friday evening and bring water to the homes affected by six separate water main breaks, according to Mike McCarron, a Millbrae city project manager.

The first break occurred at 11:20 p.m. Thursday night in the vicinity of Camino Alto and Silva Court. A second water main break occurred at 1:20 a.m. Friday near the intersection of Loyola Drive and Murchison Avenue.

At 4 a.m., two lines had breaks, one at the intersection of Helen and Geraldine drives and one near the intersection of Larkspur and Ridgewood drives. The fifth break occurred at Millbrae Avenue and Minorca Way at 6 a.m. Friday, McCarron said. A sixth break was also reported, officials said.

Originally about 1,000 homes were affected, however public works crews have been busy repairing the lines, McCarron said. The break at Loyola and Murchinson was repaired by 6:30 a.m., restoring service to about 900 customers.

While crews continue to repair the lines, streets have been closed within the city. Lomita Avenue between Ridgewood Drive and Bayview Drive is closed, Helen Drive between Tioga Drive and Christine Lane is closed and Camino Alto at Silva Court is cordoned off, according to McCarron.

There is no estimate for when the lines will be completely repaired, McCarron said. He said the city is still not certain what caused the water mains to break.
