Sunnyvale, San Jose, Fremont Among Nation's Safest Cities: Report

Residents of Sunnyvale, San Jose and Fremont can rest easy — their hometowns are among the nation’s safest.

A new study by financial advice company SmartAsset ranks Sunnyvale in first place, San Jose in sixth and Fremont in eighth.

The study looked at six factors, including the violent crime rate and number of people killed in traffic accidents.

Although San Jose was named sixth safest, it tops the list among so-called big cities whose populations exceed 500,000.

But Mayor Sam Liccardo refuses to rest on his laurels. There’s more work to be done, he said.

"The good news is we have a hard working police force and we are working on expanding staffing," he said. "We plan to add new technology [to detect] crime hot spots this year."

Liccardo also said that San Jose is working on developing a video camera registry for residents so police can quickly ascertain if they can access surveillance video near a crime scene.

The mayor also said more than 25 new community service officers will hit the streets in April. They will be able to take on reports and handle traffic accidents, freeing up patrol officers to focus on violent crime, Liccardo said.
