A man was seriously injured while surfing at a popular spot in Half Moon Bay, Saturday morning, the Examiner reports.

Firefighters responded around 10 a.m.  to a report of a man injured at the Mavericks, located about a half-mile from Pillar Point Harbor, Battalion Chief Ari Delay said.

The surfer, who is about 30 years old,  was found face down in the water by someone who was nearby and took him to shore, Delay said.

The man was not breathing and was unresponsive, but quick thinking rescuers helped turn him on his side, and clear his airway. Emergency workers responded shortly after, and were able to revive him with CPR.

The surfer was taken to to Stanford by helicopter and is reported to be in critical condition.
