Surfline.com Founder Dies at 59

Collins collapsed while playing tennis.

There was a time when surfers spent much of their time behind-the-wheel on "surfin' safari'' journeys in search of waves.

Sean Collins changed all that with telephone Surfline reports based on observations from a stable of seasoned wave riders up and down the California coast.

Satellites and technology later allowed posting of worldwide surf spot reports on his www.surfline.com website.

His youngest son A.J. Collins tells the Orange County Register that his father was playing tennis in Newport Beach on Monday afternoon when he collapsed and died of a heart attack.

He was 59. The Seal Beach resident was inducted into the Surfers Hall of Fame in 2008.
