Teen Wanted in Ice Cream Truck Driver Shooting

Vallejo police are on the hunt for a 15-year-old boy who they say shot a beloved ice cream truck driver in what appears to be a "robbery gone bad."

Peter Montenegro, who police say has ties to both the Vallejo and Hayward areas, is suspected of shooting 39-year-old Amarjit Kaur Wednesday afternoon as she sold ice cream to the neighborhood kids.

A passerby found Kaur slumped behind the wheel of her ice cream truck at about 2:40 p.m. in the area of Springs Road and Castlewood Drive, police said. Kaur was shot in the chest and  had surgery at John Muir Medical center in Walnut Creek. She was listed in serious but stable condition Thursday, Lt. Abel Tenorio said.

Police on Friday said they found the gun used in the shooting and arrested a 14-year-old who they say is an accomplice to the crime.

Police said Montenegro ran away from home and his whereabouts are unknown. He should be considered armed and dangerous and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. He is described as 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 10  inches tall, weighing at least 200 pounds and was last seen wearing a black pea coat, police said.

A surveillance camera at a hot dog shop near the shooting caught video of Montenegro shortly after the attack.
