Teen Pleads Not Guilty in Paramedic Slaying

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A 16-year-old high school student charged as an adult in the slaying of a paramedic in Oakland has pleaded not guilty.

The Oakland Tribune reports that Christian Burton entered the plea on Monday. He has been charged with murder in the April 2 slaying of 34-year-old Quinn Boyer.

Prosecutors say Burton shot and killed Boyer at point-blank range during an attempted carjacking while Boyer was sitting in his parked car. Burton and five other teens had allegedly driven up to Boyer, who was off-duty, in a stolen car.

Boyer died on April 4.

Police have said Burton acknowledged pulling the trigger. Burton's dad, Richard, says his son is not capable of killing someone. He says he drove his son to school on the day of the shooting and would have heard if he had skipped class.
