A wanted burglary felon from Texas who was driving a stolen motorcycle without wearing his helmet was arrested following a chase on foot and a scuffle in Palo Alto.

At about 9:40 p.m. on Sunday, two officers in a patrol vehicle stopped a motorcyclist, later identified as 27-year-old Aaron Keith Stanley of Henrietta, Texas, on Churchill Avenue just west of Alma Street in Palo Alto for riding a motorcycle without a helmet.

Lt. Zach Perron said Stanley gave the officers his information and one officer returned to the police vehicle to write a citation while the other officer stood next to the motorcyclist.

Stanley then started the motorcycle in an attempt to ride away from the officers, police said.

The officer closest to the motorcycle grabbed Stanley and pulled him off of the motorcycle, officers said.

Stanley was able to break free and attempted to flee from the officers on foot. Both officers pursued him on foot pursuit down Churchill Avenue towards El Camino Real, police said.

One of the officers tackled Stanley to the ground and both officers struggled with him briefly before taking him into custody.

Stanley suffered minor injuries to his face during the struggle. Medical personnel treated him at the scene, police said.

One of the officers who pursued Stanley also suffered minor injuries to his hand and forearm, but did not seek medical attention. The other officer was not injured during the incident, police said.

An investigation revealed that Stanley had a felony larceny warrant for his arrest out of Texas' Clay County. He is also on active parole in Texas for residential burglary, according to Palo Alto police.

Police determined that Stanley had stolen the motorcycle, described as a 2003 Yamaha R6, just three hours earlier in San Francisco. He was found to be driving the stolen motorcycle without a license.

Police also found a hypodermic needle inside Stanley's backpack.

Stanley was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail pursuant to the Texas warrant and for vehicle theft, resisting arrest, possession of a hypodermic needle and driving without a license, officers said.
