Threat of Lightning Strikes in Bay Area Put Cal Fire Crews on High Alert

Cal Fire crews are on high alert after lightning strikes hit parts of the Bay Area on Friday.

The lightning activity is being closely monitored by firefighters, who are also dealing with the state's outbreak of wildfires. Gov. Jerry Brown on Friday also declared a state of emergency to bolster the state's wildfire response.

"It's a very busy time and we do not have our full forces on the Cal Fire side within the Bay Area," said Jim Crawford, a Cal Fire division chief. "But we do have a number of resources we've brought in."

Cal Fire said the Bay Area so far has not had many so-called "positive strikes" similar to the ones reported in the Central Valley two weeks ago.

Cal Fire staffed its lookout tower above Mount Hamilton on Friday to help monitor lightning activity. Crews are expected to be on high alert for at least the next 72 hours, Cal Fire said.
