Is Your Pet Missing? Peninsula Shelter Still Hasn't ID'd 3 Pets Who Ran Away After July 4 Fireworks

All but three of the 21 lost animals who found refuge at the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA (PHS/SPCA) on the Fourth of July have been identified, according to the shelter.

Major holidays and large public gatherings such as winning the Super Bowl usually result in at least a few frightened animals wandering from their home or owners.

"We expect it," said Ken White, the president of the PHS/SPCA. "But it is always a wonderful moment to see them return home."

Several of the remaining animals have been identified through tags or microchips, and the shelter is working with that information to contact their owners.

However, three animals did not have any form of identification it could use for potential leads.

Owners reporting missing pets on the Fourth of July are asked to visit the Coyote Point shelter in person at 12 Airport Blvd. in San Mateo.

The facility does not release any specific details of the animals in their temporary care until a four-day period has passed.

At that time, on July 9, White says the shelter will shift its focus to adoption, taking care of any neutering or veterinary care the animal needs before they become available for potential families.

"Sadly, some owners never visit to claim their pets," said Buffy Martin Tarbox, the PHS/SPCA communications manager. "In those cases, we make every effort to find new homes."

PHS/SPCA is located next to Coyote Point Park, at 12 Airport Blvd. in San Mateo.

PHS/SPCA lists the lost and found hours as 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the weekends.
