Three Die in NB 280 Crash on Peninsula

Traffic backed up for ten miles south of the crash

A driver who was changing his tire along Interstate 280 Friday afternoon was struck and killed Friday afternoon, according to the CHP.

The CHP said the person was one of three to die in the crash that happened in the northbound lanes just north of Edgewood in San Mateo County.

The CHP said the crash happened at 3:10 p.m.

CHP Officer Art Montiel told Bay City News a Lexus sedan was stopped at the center divide when it was struck by a black Volkswagen SUV that swerved into the center divide.

Three of four people in the Lexus were pronounced dead at the scene.

The fourth person, plus the Volkswagen's driver were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Montiel said the Volkswagen's driver, a man in his 80s,  will be arrested upon his release from the hospital on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter. Witnesses said he was speeding ahead of the crash.

The victims were not identified by name, but they are a woman in her late 40s, a 21-year-old  woman and a 28-year-old man, according to the CHP.

The accident shut down four lanes of NB 280. Cars were only able to get by on a fifth exit lane near the crash that leads to a Vista Point.

A helicopter over the scene showed a mangled Lexus on the road surrounded by emergency vehicles. The Volwagen SUV was two lanes over with major front end damage.

The CHP said the lanes would not be cleared until at least 7 p.m.
