Toddler, Mom Killed In Fire

Residents Jumped From Second Story To Escape

A three-year-old girl, her mother, and her mother's male friend are dead this morning, after a fire ripped through an apartment building in Oakland overnight.

Firefighters say the toddler's 7-year-old sister somehow survived.

Oakland police officers tell Today In The Bay's Christie Smith that all three were taken by ambulance from the apartment complex at 1756 82nd Avenue to a nearby hospital  - where they later died.

Oakland firefighters say two other female residents of the four-unit apartment building jumped from a second story window to escape the flames.

Both are now in the hospital with serious leg injuries.

Firefighters say the apartment complex is a bank-owned property, and that electricity to the building had been cut off on December 2.

Firefighters also say there were no working fire alarms or smoke detectors in the apartment complex.
