Tom Hanks has a big soft spot for Girl Scouts and their cookies, as one Los Altos troop recently discovered.
Girl Scouts Anushka Srinivasan, Claire Chen and Addyson Andrade, who are fifth grade students at Bullis Charter School in Los Altos, got the surprise of a lifetime on February 28 when Tom Hanks stopped at their downtown stand. According to the Los Altos Town Crier, Hanks not only bought four boxes, he also donated $20 and offered to take pictures with other people who bought cookies.
"It's been an amazing experience for them," Anushka's mother Archana Appanna told NBC Bay Area. "Initially it was a great thing to talk about among the girls in their troop, on Monday it was all over school, this week it's all over town and now it's gone viral. It has been tremendously eye opening how news about a good deed like this can spread so quickly and widely. I think it is fantastic that they have been associated with such a positive story and we are exhilarated by it."
The Crier reports that Hanks was with his son Truman, a freshman at Stanford University; they had come to downtown Los Altos to look at and ultimately purchase typewriters at Los Altos Business Machines. Hanks designed a typewriter-emulation app for iPad called Hanx Writer and told NPR that he thinks typewriters are "beautiful works of art" and that he avidly collects them "from every ridiculous source possible."
Meanwhile, Anushka Srinivasan and her friends have sold out of their Girl Scout Cookie cache, and she is presently working on a fun new project: "She has been making a list of Tom Hanks movies to watch during spring break," revealed her mother.
