Too-High San Francisco Minimum Wage Is Closing Luna Park, Owner Says

Popular Mission eatery owner says high wages are driving him out of biz.

Luna Park is closing.

And you can blame minimum wage, the Valencia Street eatery's owner says.

SF Eater reports that owner AJ Gilbert is closing thanks to projected rising labor costs caused by a minimum wage increase on the San Francisco ballot next week.

San Francisco's minimum wage could rise to $15 over the next few years if voters approve an initiative at the ballot. It's no sure thing -- except Gilbert thinks it is, Eater reported, and is planning accordingly.

The long-running brunch spot's exit strategy is already in place: Gilbert is selling the place to a group run by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has a stake in MatrixFillmore, Eater reported.

Luna Park's new iteration, under the stewardship of Gaslight Cafe Partners LLC, will have fewer staff as a bar, and will thusly avoid those extra labor costs, Eater posits.
