Trash-Bound Medical Gear Headed to Haiti

It's often said "one man's trash is another man's treasure." There's a Bay Area charity taking that frame of mind to another level -- of the lifesaving kind.

Thousands of dollars in medical supplies that was headed to a landfill is now on the way from the Bay Area to earthquake-ravaged Haiti instead.

Charity group MedShare is ready to send out six containers full of essential items to help treat the thousands of injured victims of Tuesday's 7.0 earthquake. The shipment, which includes gauze, bandages, oxygen, casting suplies and other items is just the first the group plans to send.

This isn't the first time MedShare has come to the aid of a country in need and it won't be the last. The nonprofit has recently shipped emergency medical supplies to American Samoa for tsunami relief, Philippines for typhoon relief and a shipment is pending to help rebuild a hospital in Indonesia also effected by a recent earthquake.

They've been a friend to Haiti for many years and have sent dozens of containers of medical supplies to various hospitals on the poor island nation over the past 10 years. The next shipments MedShare is planning to send will include more long-term care items, like hospital beds and medical machinery.
