Fires Near Highway 87 and I-280 in San Jose Contained

Firefighters extinguished two fires near northbound Highway 87 and Interstate 280 in San Jose Thursday afternoon as well as one that burned through an outbuilding and came close to a home on Communications Hill.

Fire crews battled the blazes from the ground and air, and even got some help from neighbors who pitched in.

"We got a few hoses, we joined them together, and we just started spraying the fire," resident Naseer Ahmed said. "That was a crazy blaze."

The fire on Communications Hill moved fast up the hill and burned right up to the back of some homes. The fast moving fire had neighbors nervous.

"It just started spreading as the wind was going," said Jennifer Montano. "It got pretty close to the house behind me. These are the houses that are pretty close to this field, and you could just feel the heat and all the debris flying in the air."

A shed or garage near one home was destroyed, but firefighters were able to douse the flames before they reached the main house.

The cause of the fires are under investigation.
