Two People Died in Rollover Crash Near Mills College

An Oakland woman was apparently speeding in a car that crashed near Mills College in Oakland early Sunday, killing two passengers in the car, police said Monday morning.

The 25-year-old driver managed to escape the 1991 Toyota Corolla after it rolled over and hit a tree at 2:14 a.m. Sunday near Seminary and Outlook avenues but her four passengers were trapped inside, police and fire officials said.

Emergency responders extricated them and took Duwan Palmer, 21, of Emeryville and Kenisha Lewis, 28, to Highland Hospital, where they died later that day, according to the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

The driver was found blocks away near the corner of MacArthur Boulevard and 55th Avenue. She and the two other passengers -- two men ages 18 and 21 -- were taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley in critical condition, police and fire officials said.

Police said it appears the driver was speeding and it is unclear if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Anyone with information about the crash has been asked to call Oakland police Officer Glenn Hara at (510) 777-8540.
