UC Berkeley Police Report Rise in Auto Burglaries

Police at UC Berkeley are warning residents to stay vigilant in response to a rise in thefts from cars.

Police said there have been nine auto burglaries throughout the campus' parking lots and structures in January.

They said in almost all of the incidents valuables were left in sight and the victim's windows had been smashed.

Campus police recommended residents take precautions to protect their property. They advised residents not to leave valuables visible and make sure all windows are closed and all doors locked.

Also, they said to park vehicles in well-lit and heavily populated areas and avoid parking next occupied vehicles.

One last thing police recommend is to make copies of insurance and registration documents for wallets and purses and to remove all forms of identification from the car.

Police are asking residents who have seen any suspicious activity or individuals to contact UCPD immediately by dialing 911 or (510) 642-3333.
