UC Berkeley Researchers Turn Sugar-Fed Yeast into Pharmaceuticals

Brewing up batches of morphine - as easily as brewing beer.

That could soon be the reality after a team of UC Berkeley researchers figured out how to turn sugar-fed yeast into pharmaceuticals.

The steps needed to turn the yeast into a chemical precursor to morphine were published Monday.

Researchers haven't put the steps into action yet, but they say it won't be that hard to do so.

The synthetic process can be used to create antibiotics and cancer therapies as well as pain killers.

While it's exciting news for the medical community, regulators are very concerned.
