UC Berkeley Student Attacked With Knife After Refusing Cigarette Request: Police

A University of California at Berkeley student was attacked by a suspect with a knife early Wednesday morning at University Village in Albany after he refused a request for a cigarette, according to campus police.

The victim, a 27-year-old male, was standing near Ohlone Avenue and Jackson Street around 2:47 a.m. when he was approached by the male suspect and asked for a cigarette, according to police.
          
When the victim said no, the suspect pulled a knife out of his waistband and began to struggle with the victim, police said.
          
The victim held on to the suspect's arm, but was punched several times during the struggle before the suspect fled south on Jackson, police said.
          
The victim was treated at a local hospital for his injuries.
   
University police could not locate the suspect in a search fo the area. He is described as a white male in his 40s, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet in height with a thin build, a scraggly beard and several missing upper teeth.
