Just one hundred days until the opening ceremony of the winter Olympics and with the games getting so close, we are checking in with athletes from Northern California.
Like the owner of this Olympic gold medal from the 2014 games in Sochi, Russia. South Lake Tahoe’s Maddie Bowman is expected to lead a strong team of halfpipe Skiiers to PyeongChang, South Korea.
So, how has winning the gold changed Bowman’s life?
“Aside from a little bit more pressure the gold medal – it changed my life in a way that I wasn't really expecting,” Bowman said. “You know I received this platform that I didn't have before. And so I've had the opportunity to interact with young kids more about sports and also you know you know speak out about climate change.”
Believe it or not, Maddie Bowman's favorite memory from the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia wasn't actually winning the gold medal. In fact, it didn't even happen in Russia. “That high you get when you win a gold medal is insane, like it’s the top of the top. And you’re just indestructible,” Bowman told NBC Bay Area. “Everyone has this pressure that builds over four years, it’s hard to figure out how to cope with it and we each do our own thing, but it’s definitely there. I think once I get my skis on my feet I’m just gonna be so happy.”
Bowman’s favorite memory from the Olympics is when she came home. “They hosted a parade from the high school in South Lake to Sierra Tahoe our home mountain, and the community like came together, and I was able to thank all of these people that helped me get there,” Bowman said. I think that was the coolest thing for me: to be able to share this with them, and just like feeling the love. I just feel so spoiled.”
