Uber Plans to Expand Rideshare Service to Lake Tahoe

Uber plans to expand ridesharing to Lake Tahoe before the end of the year, making it easier to get an Uber ride between California and Nevada.

Uber spokesperson Laura Zapata said the official launch date has not yet been decided. but it could be as early as this week.

An agreement with Nevada allows Uber to simultaneously launch on both sides of Lake Tahoe.

Zapata said people have been requesting Uber services to Tahoe, especially in the Bay Area, for the ski season.

Nevada lawmakers passed bills this spring creating a legal foundation for ridesharing companies — separate from taxi laws — and Uber launched in September.

Uber will be hosting onboarding sessions to recruit potential Lake Tahoe drivers Monday through Thursday, 11am to 6pm, at Squaw Village, Olympic Valley.

Drivers can drop off passengers in Nevada or California, but must be licensed to drive in the state where they pick up fares.

An Uber-sponsored survey found that in the past year, the number of Uber drivers has doubled from 160,000 to over 400,000. As of November 2015, women Uber drivers make up 19 percent of all drivers, compared to 14 percent in December 2014.
