Union City Elementary School on Lockdown As Police Search For Burglary Suspect

Police searching for a burglary suspect in Union City ordered an elementary school locked down and asked nearby residents to shelter-in-place, police and school officials said. The lockdown was over by about 1:20 p.m.

Police informed staff at Tom Kitayama Elementary School 1959 Sunsprite Drive of the search and ordered a lockdown at about 11 a.m., New Haven Unified School District spokesman John Mattos said.

The burglary suspect was not suspected to be on campus and the lockdown was a precaution, Mattos said, but to make sure police searched the campus at about 12:15 p.m. without finding the suspect.

Police said that residents in the area of Medallion Drive, Claremont Street and Sheffield Lane have been asked to stay inside.

School district officials sent a message to parents informing them of the situation. All students and school staff are accounted for and safe, Mattos said.
