Yellow Powder Prompts Union City Hazmat Response

Police cleared the scene of a suspicious materials incident in Union City Friday afternoon after investigators determined the suspicious substance came from a package containing broken printer ink cartridges.

Officers responded at 11:25 a.m. to a possible hazardous materials spill at Dowe Business Park in the 32900 block of Alvarado-Niles Road, according to police.

One person was transported to a hospital after opening the package and complaining of burning eyes and a runny nose after coming into contact with a yellow powdery substance, Union City police Cmdr. Ben Horner said.

Police said the victim was an office worker at a small research and development company.

Investigators said the substance came from broken printer ink cartridges.

The employee was transported to a hospital as a precautionary measure.

An Alameda County hazardous materials team responded to the scene to investigate the chemical makeup of the substance, according to Horner.

The scene was cleared around 1:30 p.m.
