Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams fell short in a first-round battle with Bethanie Mattek-Sands at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose.
Mattek-Sands won six consecutive games with a final score of 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-1.
"I'm sad I couldn't' do it for the fans today," said Williams after being asked about her San Jose fans.
Mattek-Sands will advance to face Carla Suarez Navarro in the second round for a chance to compete in the quarterfinals.
