Water Use Reduction Targets for Bay Area Cities

California water regulators plan to assign mandatory water use reduction targets for cities depending on how much water residents use.

The targets range from 10 to 35 percent and were assigned based on per-person, per-day water use in September 2014. Water use from the nine-month period from June 2015 to February 2016 will be compared to the same months in 2013.

Below are the biggest cities in each water reduction category, as ranked by total gallons of water used, listed with their per-capita daily consumption in gallons:

-- San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, San Francisco, 46, 10%

-- City of Hayward, Alameda, 52, 10%

-- East Bay Municipal Utilities District, Alameda, 84, 20%

-- San Jose Water Company, Santa Clara, 95, 20%
