A cashier was booked into Alameda County Jail on attempted murder and second-degree robbery charges after a 12-year-old boy on Monday was stabbed with scissors in a San Leandro bank.
Jail records show that Iyona Dzshae Hammond, 32, of Oakland, who lists her occupation as a cashier, will be arraigned on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Hayward Hall of Justice. She is in custody without bail.
Witnesses told police that she also robbed another person making a cash deposit. It's unclear why she stabbed the boy. Police said she was originally arrested on charged of assault with a deadly weapon, but upgraded the seriousness of the crime when they reviewed surveillance video.
Security guards were able to contain the woman for a short time before she rushed out and right into the hands of the police at the corner of E. 14th Street and Estudillo Avenue. Lt. Robert McManus said she had blood on her hands and was armed with the scissors allegedly used to harm the boy.
McManus said Hammond went into the Wells Fargo bank at 11:30 a.m. and stabbed the boy in the back three times while he was sitting in a lounge chair. McManus said the boy is expected to survive his injuries.
McManus said the boy is from out of state and had just arrived in town this past weekend to visit family.
"I can only imagine what this boy is going through, the shock, the scare," McManus said. "He's probably frightened right now."
