Woman Drowns at Sunset State Beach Near Watsonville

A woman has died after getting caught in a rip current during a Labor Day visit to a Northern California beach.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel says the woman, who was in her late 30s, was at the south end of Sunset State Beach near Watsonville around 10 a.m. Monday when she was seen struggling in the current.

State Parks Supervising Lifeguard Dan Perry says witnesses saw the woman go face down in the water. She was pulled to shore and given medical aid but died at a hospital.

The cause of her death hasn't been determined.
