Woman Violently Hit, Robbed Outside San Leandro Mall

A 15-year-old girl was arrested for robbing a woman and violently hitting her at a mall parking lot in San Leandro on Monday afternoon, a police lieutenant said.

The woman in her 60s was putting items inside her vehicle at the Bayfair Center at 1555 E. 14th St. around noon when the girl walked up behind her and attempted to snatch the woman's purse, Lt. Randall Brandt said.

A struggle ensued between the two as the girl struck the woman to the ground and kicked her multiple times in the head, he said.

The girl escaped with the purse and fled in a waiting vehicle, he said.

A passerby aided the victim and reported the incident to police, Brandt said.

The woman was transported for several injuries and released, Brandt said.

Officers located the suspect vehicle driving on northbound Interstate Highway 580.

The car exited the freeway and the suspects abandoned it in East Oakland however they were found several blocks away in the 9000 block of International Boulevard, according to police.

The woman's purse was recovered, Brandt said.

The girl and two 16-year-old males were booked into Alameda County Juvenile Hall, he said.

They were driving a car stolen in San Leandro on Sunday, he said.

"The holidays are here and we are increasing patrols in several areas of our city. If it wasn't for the good observations and the immediate call into our dispatch center these arrests may not have been possible," Brandt said.
