A woman has been shot and at least one school is on lockdown while police search for an active shooter near Sacramento.
An unidentified woman was shot Monday morning in Carmichael, a suburb of Sacramento, KCRA reports. The woman was shot in the neck and taken to a hospital. Her condition was not immediately available.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's office describes it as an active shooter situation.
Charles Peck Elementary School, which is about half mile away from the shooting scene, has been locked down as precaution, police said. There are no other reports of injuries.
Kevin Williams lives near where the shooting happened.
"I was in the house at the time when I heard four shots and a woman screaming,'' Williams said. "I stuck my head out of the door and saw my neighbor sitting on the driveway with blood on her, and I went in to call 911.''
The woman was conscious when neighbors found her, Williams said. The woman and the gunman live at a duplex with a teenage son, he added.
Madison Avenue is closed at Rutland Drive. Motorists and pedestrians should avoid the area.
