Alameda County Sheriff's Cadet Killed in Freeway Shooting Laid to Rest

One on one with Sheriff Greg Ahern about how recruit David Nguyen will be honored

NBC Universal, Inc. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office recruit who died in an interstate shooting earlier this month was laid to rest Monday. NBC Bay Area’s Melissa Colorado was at the service in Livermore for the emotional tribute.

Alameda County Sheriff's cadet David Nguyen, who was killed in a freeway shooting earlier this month, was laid to rest Monday in Livermore.

Nguyen, 28, was driving home after cadet training on the afternoon of Jan. 4 when he was shot and killed near the Bay Bridge toll plaza.

Sheriff Greg Ahern remembered Nguyen as a recruit any law enforcement agency would be pleased to have.

“David was an excellent recruit, everything you could want in a future law enforcement officer," he said.

In an interview with "Today in the Bay" anchor Kris Sanchez, Alameda County Sheriff Greg Ahern remembers cadet David Nguyen, who was shot and killed on an East Bay freeway earlier this month.

As Nguyen’s fellow recruits escorted his casket to the hearse that would take his body to his final resting place in Colma, his parents trailed behind. A mother’s heartbreak echoed throughout the church.

“Be kind, compassionate, to take care of your loved ones, take care of the community because you know that’s what David would want so don’t disappoint him OK guys,” said sister Barbara Nguyen.

A CHP spokesperson said Monday they could not release any updates from the investigation.
