Alameda County Sheriff's Deputies Kill Man Wielding Baseball Bat in San Lorenzo

An Alameda County Sheriff's deputy and sergeant fatally shot a 60-year-old man on Tuesday night after they say he pulled out a bat and started attacking the sergeant.

Sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson said the man became very "combative" when paramedics were called out to the 100 block of Paseo Grande in San Lorenzo about 10 p.m. to help with a "medical issue."

The paramedics called for backup, and when sheriff's deputies arrived, the man began hitting the sergeant on the arm with a baseball bat, causing the sergeant to drop his rifle, Nelson said.

Nelson released a photo of the bat, showing it laying on a rug with what appears to be plaster scattered around a green rug.

Deputies have been to this home before. Nelson said it was the 19th time since 2011, mostly for domestic violence.
