Alameda County Sheriff's Deputy Laid to Rest After Being Hit by Inmate Bus

Fallen Alameda County Sheriff's Deputy Michael Foley, who was struck last week by an inmate transport bus at the Santa Rita jail and later died, was laid to rest Friday.

The 60-year-old deputy's funeral service began at 11 a.m. at the Concord Pavilion following a lengthy procession of law enforcement personnel from the Oakmont Mortuary in Lafayette to Concord.

Foley, who previously spent roughly 30 years with the Concord Police Department, was walking behind the bus last Thursday when the driver backed up and struck him, according to sheriff's officials. Foley suffered traumatic brain injuries as a result of the crash. He was rushed to Join Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, but he succumbed to his injuries last Friday.

The Alameda County sheriff's deputy is being remembered by his colleagues as a mentor who was dedicated to teaching and inspiring the up-and-coming members of the force.

"When (Foley) came over to us in 2007, he brought that same mindset to teach and guide and mentor our young people," Alameda County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ray Kelly said.

Low visibility stemming from stormy conditions is believed to be a major factor in the fatal collision, according to sheriff's officials.

Foley is survived by his three siblings, his father, his wife and two children.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Foley's family. The page had grossed nearly $23,000 as of Friday morning.
