Police Shoot Alleged Carjacker Who Wrecks Stolen Car, Disobeys Officers' Instructions

An alleged carjacker was shot in the torso Sunday morning after he wrecked a stolen vehicle, tried to carjack several more, and ignored police officers' commands.

At 6:53 a.m. Sunday, San Francisco police officers responded to a report of a possible hit-and-run collision, between a white car and light pole, near North McDonnell Road and San Bruno Avenue.

Officers discovered that the car had been stolen from San Francisco International Airport where a woman had parked it while she ran the marathon, police chief Greg Suhr said.

One officer made contact with a man believed to be involved in the accident but he fled on foot. Police said that the suspect instead jumped into the passenger side of a red car that was stopped at a light, traveling west bound on San Bruno Avenue at Highway 101.

The officer ordered both the suspect and motorist to exit the car. It was later determined that the suspect attempted to carjack the vehicle but was unsuccessful because the driver refused to cooperate with him, police reported.

Meanwhile, the suspect, who got out of the car and ran under the San Bruno Avenue overpass onto Highway 101, was chased on foot by other responding officers. The man ran across traffic lanes, forcing northbound drivers to halt, police said.

As an officer approached him, the man tried to open several cars' doors but was unable to enter them. The officer ordered the suspect to raise his hands but the man refused, instead charging at the officer, police said.

Fearing for his life, the officer discharged two rounds, one of which hit the suspect in the torso, according to police.  The man was transported to San Francisco General Hospital and is in stable condition.

The officer was not injured, police said.

The incident occurred in San Mateo County and will be investigated by the District Attorney and Sheriff’s Office. People with information about the case can call the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office at (650) 363-4911.
