American Oak Restaurant Damaged by Fire

Fire personnel are looking into a suspicious one-alarm fire at a restaurant in Downtown Alameda Saturday morning.

Dispatchers received multiple reports of a fire at the American Oak Restaurant in the 2200 block of Santa Clara Avenue around 6 a.m., Fire Division Chief Matt Tunney said.

Crews arriving on the scene saw smoke coming from the building. Flames were spreading through the inside of the restaurant, the chief said.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze from inside, where they found signs that the fire was "of a suspicious nature," Tunney said.

The chief said the fire caused more than $200,000 to the restaurant. No injuries were reported.

Investigators remained at the scene of the fire throughout the day to look into what caused the blaze.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
