A group of activists plans to disrupt a free Fourth of July block party at Jack London Square in Oakland Wednesday afternoon with fake blood and butchers using fake knives, the group said.
Direct Action Everywhere, a network of animal rights activists, is protesting at the free block party, which features live music, entertainment and beer and BBQ. In a statement, the activists described barbequing as "violence against animals."
Though organizers of the Jack London Square event have engaged in dialogue with the activists, according to Direct Action Everywhere, the group is not satisfied, describing Wesnesday's event as "normalizing" and "glorifying" animal exploitation.
The Jack London Square July Fourth block party takes place at Broadway and Embarcadero and will feature live Afro-Funk, hip-hop and reggae music, entertainment and BBQ and beer, according to the organizers. About 10,000 people are expected to attend.
The protesters plan to disrupt the event at 1:30 p.m. with caged activists wearing animal masks, butchers using fake knives and "a splashing of fake blood," the group said.
