Apple TV got an update today, with a few new features, but still lacking a few obvious ones.
With the 4.2 update Apple TV will now be able to stream live and archived U.S. NBA and MLB games, as well as give Netflix streaming 5.1 Dolby audio, says PC Mag.
Suddenly your Apple TV seems a little more useful.
The NBA's "League Pass Broadband" lets you follow seven teams for $64.95 a year. For $99.95, you can check out games from all 30 teams.
Meanwhile the MLB will not only offer live and archived games to the Apple TV, but also to the Roku and PlayStation 3. Packages start at $19.95 a month or $99.95 a year for the Standard Package, and $24.99 a month or $199.99 a year for the Premium Package. You'll want to check out MLB.tv to see what package suits you best.
Still missing from the Apple TV are the ability to download and use third party apps. The software is essentially the same as that of the iPhone and iPad, but for some reason Apple has it locked down. I imagine it's only a matter of time before we get a lot more use out of our Apple TV's.
