Apple Unplugs the Pod

After a seven year battle, Apple has finally given up the battle to own the word "pod."

Patently Apple reports that the Cupertino-based company has ended its battle to patent the word with the the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.

The patent abandonment became official on April 13, 2001. Apple had tried in almost 30 different ways to convince the patent office to grant it ownership over the word used in the iPod.

But every attempt was denied.

Apple's abandonment of the patent opens the doors for other companies to try and patent pod and benefit off of it.

Another word Apple has tried to patent has also had its trouble. The iTunes-maker has tried to patent the words "App Store" but Microsoft has fought that request.
