Attacks Leave 2 Men in San Francisco With Life-Threatening Head Injuries

Two men suffered traumatic brain injuries in separate attacks in San Francisco's Bernal Heights and Bayview District neighborhoods over the weekend, police said Monday.

On Friday afternoon, a 42-year-old man was inside a liquor store in the 3300 block of Mission Street, near 29th Street, when he apparently began arguing with another man over a lottery ticket, police said.

The suspect, later identified by police as 38-year-old Abel Mancia Champas, allegedly punched the victim multiple times and then hit the victim's head against a shelf, according to police.

The victim fell to the floor and lost consciousness before being transported to a hospital.

Police said the man suffered a life-threatening head injury, broken jaw and broken nose.

San Francisco police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said Champas was booked into county jail on suspicion of aggravated assault.

A separate case occurred early Sunday morning in the Bayview District.

A 53-year-old man was walking to a liquor store near Third Street and Quesada Avenue at about 12:20 a.m., but as he was crossing the road, he apparently hit the ground, police said.

Police said the victim suffered a life-threatening brain injury, scrape to the head and bruise to the arm.

Officers are investigating the possibility that the man was assaulted and are looking for video surveillance footage in the area. No arrests have been made in the case as of today, Esparza said.
