Baby Found Dead Inside NorCal Dumpster

An infant was found dead in a Dumpster at a California shopping center, Turlock police said.

A witness called police about the baby at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

The deceased infant was still warm to the touch when emergency crews got to the SaveMart shopping center in the town about 80 miles south southeast of Sacramento.

The baby, which appeared to be late- or full-term, was taken to a hospital.

Although crews tried to save the infant, the baby was later pronounced dead.

Though her identity isn't known, police said they're concerned about the mother's well-being and urged her to seek medical care.

The man who found the body said he will buy a headstone if the parents aren't located.

Jeff Merrow said he was looking in the bin behind the store when he picked up a bag full of clothes and thought it felt too heavy.

He said when he looked inside he saw the baby with her umbilical cord attached

Police noted that a law enacted in 2001 lets a parent or guardian safely surrender an infant at a designated site within 72 hours of the child’s birth.
