Police Detain Armed Burglary Suspect Following Five-Hour Standoff in San Francisco

Police detained an armed burglary suspect Friday afternoon after a five-hour standoff in San Francisco.

The suspect barricaded himself inside an apartment in the city's Nob Hill neighborhood, police said.

Office Grace Gatpandan said the suspect fired at least one shot, but no injuries were reported.

During the standoff, officers asked the public to avoid the 900 block of Pacific Avenue at Powell Street and surrounding streets. Crisis negotiators and the department's tactical unit were also called to the scene to to assist, police said.

The incident began around 9:20 a.m. when 911 dispatchers received a call from a person in the 900 block of Pacific Street saying a suspect had broken into their apartment, Gatpandan said.

Police were able to get the apartment resident out safely, but could not immediately get the barricaded man to come out.

The neighborhood is blocks away from City Lights Booksellers, the Cable Car Museum and the Stinking Rose restaurant.
