SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Bay Area Rapid Transit is set to ban the use of electronic cigarettes on its trains and at stations.
The Oakland Tribune reported Tuesday that the BART board has scheduled a Feb. 12 final vote on the ban, after giving unanimous initial approval last week.
Officials say they are responding to riders' complaints about the use of e-cigarettes, which provide nicotine via heated vapor.
The American Lung Association called for the measure, saying it is important to protect the health of riders from secondhand vapors and particle pollution from the devices.
While the district bans smoking, it has had no policy on e-cigarettes. Vaping devices would be subject to the same rules as cigarettes.
An e-cigarette industry spokesman says the measure overreaches because it bans vaping devices everywhere on BART property - not just on train cars.
