Coast Guard officials are wrapping up their cleanup of an Alameda beach nearly seven months after an oil tanker leaked 400 gallons of bunker fuel into San Francisco Bay.
Most of the fuel washed ashore on Alameda. Cleanup at Crown Memorial State Beach will be done this week, but is ongoing at Crab Cove.
The update came at a forum on oil spill readiness Tuesday.
Coast Guard officials said the Oct. 30 Dubai Star spill was caused by a series of errors, beginning when a valve failed to close during refueling. They say it got worse because the crew didn't immediately notice the tanker's fuel tank was overflowing and the fueling company failed to get boom around the spill within an hour, as required by state law.
The fuel killed dozens of birds and prompted fishing restrictions in the bay.
