El Niño-Fueled Storm Brings Heavy Rain, Blustery Winds And 15-Foot Waves to Bay Area

Bay Area residents got a heavy dose of rain Saturday, with scattered showers and blustery winds affecting multiple regions.

High temperatures were estimated to be in the upper 50s, while winds at one point reached almost 30 mph.

Coastal areas saw dangerous rip currents and waves that exceeded 15 feet, and a smattering of smaller sneaker waves. A high surf advisory was issued for the North Bay until 10 p.m. Saturday.

Waves also eroded some beachfront areas, namely Pacifica, which has already been badly affected by El Niño-fueled storms.

San Mateo received the assistance of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which sent officials to work with local leaders to update flood maps and help educate the community about weather-related risks.

Meanwhile, as snowstorm Jonas snarled air traffic on the East Coast, rain and gusty winds also affected San Francisco International Airport. Forty departing flights were canceled while 34 arrivals also got the axe, airport officials said.
