Berkeley police will be conducting a DUI checkpoint Thursday night and early Friday morning, according to a department release.

The checkpoint will be set up at Alcatraz Avenue and Adeline Street for westbound traffic between 8 p.m. Thursday and and 3 a.m. Friday, police said.

Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, as well as checking for proper licensing, police said.

Drivers are encouraged to download the Designated Driver VIP, or "DDVIP," free mobile app for Android or iPhone, which features incentives for the designated sober driver, police said. The app also has a tab for calling Uber, Lyft or Curb.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect possible jail time and expenses that can exceed $10,000, police said.
