Big-Rig Crash Snarls Traffic on I-880 in Fremont

A big-rig crashed and landed on its side on southbound Interstate Highway 880 in Fremont Wednesday morning, blocking lanes and snarling traffic, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The incident was reported around 10 a.m. when a truck heading north on I-880 near Auto Mall Parkway overturned, CHP Officer Zach Hunter said.

Hunter said the driver told authorities that he lost control after another driver cut him off, which caused him to veer over the center divide.

The front axle came off and the truck rolled onto its side on the southbound side of the highway. Some of the materials in the truck, which included car parts, went flying and a piece hit the windshield of a southbound car, Hunter said.

The part went through the windshield and cut the driver's face. That driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, Hunter said.

The truck driver was not injured in the incident.

As of 12:20 p.m., all but one southbound lane remained closed, Hunter said.
