Big Rig That Killed Boy in Cupertino Was Doing Delivery

The job of the big rig that killed a Monta Vista high student is now known.

Cupertino's rules on trucks were being obeyed by the big rig that struck and killed a 15-year old high school student near De Anza College last month, according to reports.

The San Jose Mercury News reports that Cupertino requires that trucks must use designated routes when traveling through the city, including thoroughfares like De Anza Boulevard, Homestead Road and Stevens Creek Boulevard.

That truck was not on such a route — but the truck was making a delivery, which means it was right where it needed to be when it stuck and killed Ethan Wong, 15, on McClellan Road on Oct. 27, the newspaper reported.

Wong was riding a bicycle and was at a red light with the truck when the trailer struck him "just before Bubb Road," the newspaper reported. The truck took a right and "had to be chased down by witnesses" who told the "unaware" driver that he'd hit someone.

The incident was captured on video and is still under investigation by the Santa Clara Sheriff's Department, the newspaper reported.
